Abstract
In this paper, the researcher explores the connection between strategic innovation and competitive advantage in resource-constrained small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). SMEs operate in a highly competitive and turbulent environment where financial capital, technological competence, and qualified manpower are often limited. Despite these constraints, numerous innovative SMEs are able to outperform competitors through the implementation of strategic innovation, including product redesign, process reengineering, business model innovation, and strategic renewal.
Grounded in the resource-based view and the theory of dynamic capabilities, the paper synthesizes recent literature to explain how SMEs can be resourceful with existing resources, exploit market opportunities, and create new value propositions despite limitations. The empirical review indicates that strategic innovation enhances market responsiveness, customer satisfaction, growth, and long-term competitiveness.
However, the study also identifies several challenges, including institutional bottlenecks, limited absorptive capacity, and weak innovation ecosystems. The paper highlights research gaps related to innovation pathways in low-resource environments, context-specific factors influencing innovation success, and measurement discrepancies. It concludes by offering implications for managers, policymakers, and scholars, emphasizing the need for supportive innovation policies, capacity enhancement, and the development of adaptive business models to sustain competitive advantage.
