Abstract

This paper establishes the nexus between Human Capital Development and Employee Performance of beverage firms in Edo State, Nigeria. More precisely, the work concentrates on the variable of the employee commitment having an interest to link it with the aspects of the employee training and performance. The research is underpinned by Becker's Human Capital Theory which he proposed in 1964.
A cross-sectional survey research design was adopted, using only primary data extracted through questionnaires. The study targeted a population of 447 employees from two firms: Seven-Up Bottling Company Limited-Benin Plant and Nigerian Bottling Company. Data analysis was done using regression analysis technique. Hypothesis testing results suggested that training had a positive effect on employee performance and that commitment also had a positive effect on performance (F= 14263.88, R square= 0.835, p< 0.05).
The results show that Human Capital Development enhances greatly the performance of the employee in the beverage firms under study. Accordingly, it is advised that management in these firms should encourage more frequent training sessions for employees, with a view to improving organizational performance.
