Abstract

This paper examines the barriers that micro, small, and medium-sized businesses face when trying to obtain finance, as well as potential solutions. Eight MFBs operating within the three political zones of Kaduna Metropolis were interviewed in order to gather responses from specialists in the field of microfinance lending. As a result, it was determined that transaction costs, internal limitations, sociocultural limits, and environmental policy constraints are the four primary obstacles that keep small enterprises from accessing loans.

Even if the data point to a number of factors that restrict the availability of loans, participant responses suggest that socioeconomic factors are pervasive. The study offers suggestions on how to address this issue and increase small firms' participation in the financing sector.
