Abstract
The increasing complexity of higher education in the 21st century has prompted Nigerian universities to explore innovative solutions for enhancing academic support services. AI technologies, such as personalized learning platforms, intelligent tutoring systems, and administrative automation, offer transformative opportunities for improving student engagement, academic performance, and institutional efficiency. This article examines the potential benefits of leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to address the challenges faced by academic support systems in Nigerian universities.
By integrating AI into academic support, universities can provide customized learning experiences, streamline administrative tasks, and offer data-driven insights for decision-making, thereby enhancing overall student satisfaction and success. Despite the promising advantages, the implementation of AI in Nigerian universities is hindered by several challenges. These include inadequate technological infrastructure, a lack of skilled personnel, concerns over data privacy and security, and insufficient regulatory frameworks to guide AI adoption.
The article also explores strategic approaches to overcoming these barriers, emphasizing the need for robust digital infrastructure, capacity-building initiatives for academic staff, and collaboration with educational technology companies. Drawing on successful case studies from both Nigerian and international institutions, the paper outlines practical recommendations for sustainable AI integration in academic support services. While the adoption of AI in Nigerian universities is still in its infancy, its potential to revolutionize academic support services is undeniable. This paper provides a forward-looking perspective on how AI can be effectively leveraged to improve academic outcomes and foster innovation in higher education in Nigeria.
