Abstract
This study examined Reducing Economic hardship in Nigeria: The Role of Tiers of Government with Edo Senatorial Districts in Perspective. The objective of the study is to determine the measures in place by the government at the grassroots to reduce financial hardship in providing a safety net and opportunities to individuals and society. Nigerians have been battling severe economic hardship in recent times as prices of commodities continue to increase thereby, affecting the rate of unemployment, cost of living, poverty rate, and income inequalities.
The study adopted mixed-methods research design. This approach is suitable for combining both qualitative and quantitative methods. The study population consists of 148 while the sample size of the survey is 108 using Taro Yamane's formula. Data were sourced through the primary method and descriptive statistical tools were explored for data analysis. The discussion of findings revealed that government policies and programs have had limited effectiveness in reducing the cost of living in Nigeria.
The study concluded that formal institutions should address economic hardship through effective policies and programs to reduce poverty and income inequality. It was recommended that the government should promote economic growth and job creation through targeted intervention and government should implement policies to address income inequality among vulnerable populations.
